Everyday Hero Campaign
Be an Everyday Hero – Help Support our Scholarship Program
The Y works every day to solve many of the issues we are all most concerned about. For decades we have offered programs that help kids reach their potential; that help families and individuals achieve better health outcomes; and that encourage everyone to get involved and make their community a better place. Our goal is to bring more services to more people in the key areas of: Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility. Our Everyday Heroes Annual Giving Campaign isn’t just about raising money; it is about helping people in our community when they need us the most. As a charitable organization, we consider it an honor, and our reason for being, to be able to help those in need by providing quality programs that promote respect, responsibility, honesty, caring and good health; turning no one away due to their inability to pay.
A Thankful Scholarship Recipient’s Story:
“The YMCA is a wonderful organization in our community. My family has benefited in many ways, from making new friends to being in the best shape ever. My children get to enjoy many different activities, along with new friends, and social skills which has given them a great deal of self-esteem. We’d like to say how thankful we are to everyone who helps support the financial assistance program, without it my family would never be able to enjoy the YMCA and all it has to offer.”
Since our inception, the Franklin & Grove City YMCA has been committed to strengthening our communities. With your help we hope to continue doing so for decades to come. We view participation in our programs and services as a means to a greater end and with your support, we can continue to help those in need. With your support, more children can deepen their positive values, strengthen their commitment to service and increase their motivation to learn. More families can build stronger bonds, achieving greater work life balance and become more engaged in their communities. More individuals will be able to improve their well-being and connect with people who care.
Like you, we are most concerned about the problems facing our communities. Like the Y, you understand we must all pitch in to make a difference in our community. We respectfully ask for your thoughtful consideration of supporting our 2011 Everyday Heroes Campaign.

Life Insurance
With help from his or her life insurance agent, a friend of the YMCA can make a change of beneficiary on an existing, paid-up policy to assign all or a percentage of the policy proceeds to the YMCA. He or she may also designate the YMCA as beneficiary of a new policy. For the donor to receive income tax benefits from a gift of a policy with cash value, the YMCA should also be made the owner of the policy. If the donor continues to pay premiums, they will be deductible if the donor itemizes deductions on his or her income tax return. Or annual gifts can be given to the YMCA so that it can make the premium payments.
Wills and Bequests
The reasons for making a will are compelling. Wills assure that people's assets will be distributed as they want rather than as the state decides. The well-being of their loved ones can be secured, and the causes must dear them can be strengthened. A bequest to the YMCA may be unrestricted to fill the most pressing needs or restricted to a particular program.
A bequest may be a specific amount, a percentage of one's total estate, or the amount that remains after all costs and bequests to their parties have been honored.
A bequest allows a valuable contribution to the Y, even if it comes from someone with a modest estate. One longtime employee of a small business who was also a devoted Y friend made arrangements in his will for the Y to receive a portion of the stock he had accumulated in the business.
Shared Gifts
By making a life income gift, the contributor helps secure his or her family's future - and helps secure the YMCA's ability to help children and families in the future. The contributor and/or another beneficiary he or she names is the first to receive income from such a gift. After the beneficiaries pass away, the YMCA or even a designated YMCA program, will receive the gift.
Charitable Gift Annuities
With this type of gift, one contributes to the YMCA a certain amount of money and, in return, is guaranteed a life income at rates determined by the Committee on Gift Annuities, an organization of non-profits.
A YMCA friend can make the gift by having a contract drawn up between him or herself and the YMCA. He or she has the option of deferring payments from the annuity so that they can coincide with plans such as retirement, college eduction for children, and so on.
Pooled Income Fund
Like a mutual fund, this is a common fund involving a number of donors. Each donor receives a share of the fund's yearly income based on the amount of his or her gift. He or she may also avoid capital gains tax on appreciated assets given to the pooled income fund. A donor who is part of such a pool will receive income for his or her lifetime, plus a tax deduction in the year the gift is made. After the donor's lifetime, the market value of the gift will be available to his or her designated YMCA program, or purpose.
One life member of a Y board recently retired from a Fortune 500 company. Serving on the Y's endowment committee, he had taken note of the pooled income fund's excellent track record and decided it was the best way to use the $10,000 he received upon retirement. HIs generous gift to help children and families in his town also provided him with stable quarterly income.
Life Estate
A friend of the YMCA can also support the YMCA's endowment through a life estate. A residence or farm will be deeded to the Y while the donor and his or her spouse or other beneficiary retain full rights to use the property and live on it for life.
One woman wanted to bequeath her home to the Y, but she wanted it first to be available for use by some close friends during their lifetimes. By establishing a life estate, she gained peace of mind from knowing her home would be handled as she wished. Upon her death, her friends chose not to use the home. Under an agreement that benefited both the Y and her friends, the home was sold, and a generous gift the Y's endowment was created according to the wishes of the original owner.
Endowments
Securing The Future of our YMCAs
There are a variety of gift plans that are being employed by friends of the YMCA to meet personal and family tax; estate, and charitable planning objectives. This effort is the main funding source for capital needs and development for the respected branches. A promising future is promised by individual supporters securing our heritage.
The Franklin Foundation is a independent board committed to managing the Franklin YMCAs endowed finances. We would like to thank the Foundations Board of Trustees for their dedication to the future of the Franklin YMCA.
President Bill Cisek, Treasurer John Malarkey, Andy Restauri, Roger Virgile, Bob Miller, Beverly Lake, Wendy Thompson.
The Grove City Endowment and planned giving is managed by David Cashdollar of Cashdollar & Associates, Walnut Street Securities. In 2007, the Grove City YMCA Endowment total reached $162,656 with respect to 46 individual donors. We would like to formally thank and recognize David Cashdollar for his passion and commitment to the YMCA as well as thank our individual endowment supporters of past and present:

Other Ways To Help The YMCA...
Property Gifts
Cash and Cash Equivalents
Perhaps the most common gifts that YMCAs receive come in the form of cash, checks, drafts, or money orders. Unrestricted gifts allow the Y to use the funds where they are needed most. Gifts may also be designated for the program or need that matters most to the contributor. An outright gift of cash is tax deductible for all taxpayers who itemize deductions.
Marketable securities also are often given to help the Y meet community needs. Long-term appreciated securities also are often given to help the Y meet community needs. Long-term appreciated securities are those which have been owned for more than a year and have increased in value since the time they were acquired.
A donor can contribute securities through his or her broker or by providing the stock certificated directly the Y. He or she can also contribute units owned in a mutual fund. These gifts will help the Y respond to changing needs in the years to come.
Real Property
A personal residence, a farm, or commercial property that is debt free may be given to further the YMCA. In most cases, the Y will sell the property at fair market value. In some cases, it may retain the property as an investment.
At one Y, a man who no longer had use for some land he owned in a remote location contributed it to the YMCA. For eight years, the Y held on to the on to the land and used it for a hiking program. During that time, the value grew from $18,000 to $52,000. The YMCA then sold the land and added the cash to its endowment fund.
Tangible Personal Property
Art, furniture, equipment, collections, and personal mementos that have appreciated in value may be donated to the Y. The fair market value of gifts can be deducted by the donor if the property can be used by the YMCA in carrying out its purposes and functions. Furniture for a office, athletic equipment, or toys for a child care center are examples of such a related use.
Bargain Sales
A bargain sale is selling of appreciated property to the Y at the price less than its current fair market value. This is a way to contribute to the Y's work while recovering the costs of the item. The difference between the fair market value and the sale price is eligible for tax deduction.
Everyday Heroes
Why Contribute?
- Your support is needed to provide scholarships to youth, individuals and families. With this funding we can provide scholarships for membership and programs to people who do not have the ability to pay. We turn no one away experiencing financial hardships. $175 help us provide membership services to one family for an entire year.
- Many programs and services are mission driven, which means we provide them because there is a community need and not for financial gain. Your support will help cover the cost of these services and programs so everyone can benefit. $1000, $83/month will help us provide free after-school tutoring, free aquatic classes for our senior population, free and reduced swim lessons and support community initiatives like Grove City Junior High Initiative. JHI provides free after school memeberships to every 6th, 7th, and 8th grade student.
Your Contribution Will Make A Difference In Someone's Life!
We all face difficult times, but we also know that giving is a part of the heritage of our communities - even in the hardest economic conditions there are still a lot of giving hearts that want to help their neighbors.
When you give to the YMCA or Franklin & Grove City, your gift will go directly to help one - ONE CHILD, ONE ADULT or ONE FAMILY. We have a 149% return to the community on your investment!
Through the generosity of individuals and businesses our YMCAs were able to serve over 1354 members and program participants with scholarships in 2012; nearly $192,000 in direct aid was awarded. Financial Assistance is the fastest growing membership category, 19% of our membership base.
This assistance is made possible through the generousity of our members and the community partners during our Annual Community Support Campaigns. In 2012, our volunteers raised over $133,000 to provide scholarships to families, primarily for youth and family memberships. Our combined campaign goal for 2013 is $177,000 to meet the ever increasing need in our community's.
The Franklin Branch surpassed their 2012 goal raising over $87,000. This enabled the Franklin Y to provide and award 757 individuals with membership assistance and 271 participated with program scholarships.
The Grove City Y raised $48,000 in 2012. Grove City's Community Support Campaign was able to provide and award 597 individuals with membership assistance and 152 participated with program scholarships totaling over $99,000 in direct scholarships.
As successful as we are, we are still anticipating the requests for scholarships exceeding what we have raised in support funding. So if you have not yet given, or want to give more, your support would be greatly appreciated.

Scholarships
The YMCA is a charitable, non-profit organization, whose purpose is to seek to improve the quality of community life by promoting the physical, mental and spiritual health of people of all ages, by encouraging family activities and by building respect for the individual in human relationships.
The Franklin-Grove City YMCA Board of Directors feels strongly that the YMCA is for everyone. No one will be turned away because of inability to pay, subject to the availability of funds. Our mission is to serve the people of our communities.
Scholarships are made possible by private and corporate donors, our "Everyday Heroes".
The YMCA believes that a strong sense of ownership and pride is developed if the Scholarship recipient contributes to the cost of their YMCA involvement; therefore, applicants should be asked to pay an affordable portion of the membership or program fees. All application records will be held in strict confidence.
Guideline
- The Scholarship Scale will be considered when determining the amount of financial assistance provided. The scale is the federal guidelines distributed by the area school district annually. This scale is based on income and family size.
- The Scholarship Application form will be completed by the member and will include at least two of the following forms: a copy of the prior year's 1040 and W-2; current pay stubs, and Social Security Income (SSI) payment statement.
- THANK YOU: If approved, your membership will be subsidized through the generosity of our Everyday Hero Donors. Each year we hold a campaign to raise funds to offset the cost of a membership for those who financially qualify. As a way of acknowledging our donors, we require recipients of a subsidized membership to write a "Thank You" which will be sent to one of our donors. If you prefer to remain anonymous, you do not need to sign the thank you.
- Scholarship requests are managed by the professional membership staff with all hardship or unqualified applicants brought to the Executive Director for final approval. A Scholarship Report will be provided as needed and/or annually to the Board of Managers.
